Horse Betting Terms
Here are some terms to help make things easier:
Boxed Bet - this can be used in during a trifecta, exacta, or a superfecta and it is when the bettor bets all the different combinations of a bet. For example, with an trifecta there are 6 different combinations so a $2 bet would cost $12 to cover all 6 possibilities.
Bridge Jumper - a person who bet a very large sum of money on a single horse.
Chalk Player- a person who always bets on the the horse with the best odds
Field Horse - two or more horses are put together as a single bet
Form Player - a person who uses a horses' old records to help in placing a current bet
Handicap - helps the races become more equal by applying a certain weight to each horse. There are certain events that follow this form of racing.
Juice - the amount of the money that the bookmaker makes off of others bets
Long Odds- usually referred to for a horse with odds greater than 10:1
Maiden - a horse that has never won a race
On- is when the odds of a horse will not even let the bettor break even. For example, a horse with 2:3 odds.
On the Nose - betting a horse to only win
Overlay - a horse having higher odds than it appears to have because of how it did in past events
Parimutuel- dividing up all the the money bet amongst those who have winning tickets
Parlay- occurs when a bettor wins a profit and then spends that profit towards another bet.
Pick 6 or (more)- just like a Pick 3 or 4 except the bettor will pick the winner for all races during that day.
Scratch - a horse that is taken out of the race prior to it beginning.
Take - the amount of money taken out by the government in the form of a tax.
Tout - a person who sells information about a given race.
Wager - bet
