The Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes is a part of the Triple Crown and it is held yearly during June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The Belmont is another race for three year old thoroughbred horses where they run a very long distance of 1.5 miles. The Belmont is generally called the “Run for the Carnations” because of the carnations that the winner receives. A popular song that is sung on the day on the event is the Theme from New York, New York which makes the day even more special.
History of the Belmont
The Belmont acquired its name from the famous August Belmont who was the first president of the American Jockey Club. The event is known for being the oldest Triple Crown race. It first began in 1867 on the first modern track. The event had a major downfall in 1911 and 1912 as anti-betting legislation passed laws in New York State.
The winner of the event receives a special silver bowl that was made by Tiffany. The bowl is very special as it has three horses and a figure at the top. The figure is suppose to represent the winner of the third Belmont which was Fenian. This race is a true test for these horses as they are tired from previous races and the race is a greater distance. It is hard to predict the winner for this event because the favorites even lack experience at this great of a distance. Some previous winners include Empire Maker in 2003, Jazil in 2006, and Da’ Tara in 2008.
Belmont Events
If you are looking for a specialty drink at the Belmont then try their Belmont Breeze. It consists of whiskey, cream sherry, lemon juice and syrup to just name a few. The drink was created by beverage authority Dale Degroff.
The Belmont offers two different types of seating either in the Grandstand or the Clubhouse. These seats need to be purchased before the event so get your tickets early. One nice feature they offer is free admission for children under 12 who are accompanied with an adult.
The Belmont offers some great betting odds for people who would like to place bets. As the event approaches they will begin to show future pool and track odds to win, place, and show. This helps participants who would like to make their bets before hand and just enjoy the event when they arrive.
The last horse that was able to survive the Belmont and after winning the other two Triple Crown events was Affirmed in 1978. This feat is one that has and may not be broken for awhile and that is why the Belmont is known as being the “Test of a True Champion.”
